Sexton and Koling Teach Disc Golf in Japan

The global expansion of disc golf has mirrored the rapid growth seen in the United States in recent years. With courses now established in over 85 countries, one nation with a rich history in the sport that still has room for significant development is Japan. While high-level events like the Japan Open, Tokyo Open, and Japan Nationals have been held for decades, the number of disc golfers per capita in Japan remains relatively small compared to other popular disc golf destinations. To help spread the sport and ignite interest among aspiring Japanese disc golfers, Team Innova’s Nate Sexton and Jeremy Koling, two of the sport’s most beloved ambassadors, were sent on a trip halfway across the globe. Their visit aimed to inspire Japanese players to throw as far and accurately as the dynamic duo known as “Big Sexy.”

The Clinics

Led by Japanese disc golf legend Kozo Shimbo and his team of volunteers, Nate and Jerm conducted disc golf clinics for hundreds of students in central Japan. With the help of translators, hand gestures, and the universal language of the sound of chains, they were able to teach across the language barrier. The clinics, which lasted 1-2 hours each, were held at eight different schools and included students ranging from kindergarteners to high school seniors. The class sizes varied from 15 to 85 students, and the teachers even joined in on the fun and learned alongside their students. The schools provided enough targets and discs for everyone to participate, and for those who want to continue playing, the PE programs have equipment available. The clinics were held near local courses, giving interested students the opportunity to practice their new skills. When asked if he thought any of the students he taught would stick with disc golf, Nate Sexton replied with a resounding “definitely,” especially for those who hit impressive shots and received cheers from their classmates. As Nate put it, “It’s a great chance to be a hero for a sec.”

The 8th Fukui Open

In addition to conducting clinics, Nate and Jerm also had the opportunity to compete in the 8th Fukui Open, held in Sakai-shi, Fukui, Japan. The course in Fukui is considered one of Japan’s finest, with breathtaking holes that overlook the Sea of Japan. Nate ultimately took home the victory, finishing 9 strokes ahead of Jerm, who was 19 strokes ahead of the third-place finisher. The local pros had the chance to compete against two legends of the sport, providing a unique and exciting experience for all involved.
