A rising star in disc golf faces a crucial 30-foot putt on the 18th hole of the final round at one of the few DGPT events he will compete in this season. If he makes it, he will move up from 15th to 14th place. While the difference in payout may seem insignificant and the two placements equally impressive, the player knows that this putt could be the most important of his career thus far. It is his chance to qualify for the highly coveted United States Disc Golf Championship, adding an exciting storyline to every qualifying event of the season. The pressure felt by the tournament leaders is also felt by players on the qualifying cutline, as every shot could determine their chance to compete in a tournament that many have dreamed of being a part of. On Hole 7 at Winthrop in 2024, Joona Heinänen prepares to tee off, knowing the significance of this moment.
Over the course of 30 events, including DGPT Elites, PDGA Majors, PDGA Euro Tours, and select A-tiers, a total of 2 or 4 players will earn spots to register for the USDGC. All former USDGC champions are automatically invited to register, and the top ten finishers from the previous year’s tournament are exempt from qualifying. Additionally, the winners of six restricted-division tournaments from 2023 will also receive exemptions. For those who have not yet qualified, there is still a chance to earn a spot through USDGC Monday Qualifying, which takes place the Monday before the tournament.
